SMUT BAN EFFORTS DEBATED

Back in 1932, the police in Los Angeles closed a play called “Lysistrata” because a highly emotional group of ladies decided that it was an affront to decency. The play was being staged by an amateur company and the cops went out looking for the author. In an effort to serve him with a warrant and bring him to durance vile. No one had bothered to explain to them that Aristophanes, the Greek author, had been dead for more than 2,000 years.

In our boyhood, a group of aroused moralists decided that Shakespeare's plays should be rewritten with all of the vile words removed. Since they had but a limited acquaintance with the classics they did not know that such a task would require a virtual re-write of everything the immortal playwright had penned.

Currently, a New Jersey city councilman is trying to get a law passed to eliminate undraped manikins from department windows on the grounds that a nude dress form awakened lascivious desire in the minds of 16-year-old boys.

BRAVE NEW WORLD

The Florida chapter of the ACLU has recently protested the removal of the books “1984” and “Brave New World” from the reading lists of Dade County (Miami) high school students. An anonymous telephone caller complained that the two books were “obscene and immoral” and the principal of the school forthwith removed the books from the list although he had not read either of them himself. The Dade County School Board subsequently voted unanimously to uphold the removal despite testimony as to the literary merit of the books and the high praise that both received from reviewers. Both George Orwell, author of “1984”, and Aldous Huxley who wrote “Brave New World” were recognized as ranking among the outstanding literary figures of modern times. The books are primarily political and social satires upon some obvious tendencies of our times. “1984” depicts the ultimate “welfare state” and “Brave New World” prophesies the ultimate standardization of humanity.
