BOOK DESCRIPTION
This book is the first scientific comparison ever attempted of the life styles of "swinging" and "non-swinging" couples.
The study compared and contrasted two groups of middle-class suburban married couples: 1) a group of one hundred couples who regularly engage in spouse-sharing, and 2) a group of non-swinging married couples who live in the same suburban neighborhoods as the swinging couples.
A great deal of information was obtained about the causes of spouse-sharing and the life styles associated with such behavior. The Gilmartin Report is also the first ever to give and lengthy of systematic attention to the children of swinging households. Child-rearing issues are dealt with in considerable and frank detail, and so is the philosophy of swinging parents regarding sexual privileges for their adolescent offspring.
Readers, both professional and general, will be amazed at many of the conclusions drawn regarding the consequences that sexual spouse-sharing has for marriage. The book debunks many myths. For example, swinging and conventional adultery do not have the same consequences for marriage. On the other hand, some popular ideas are supported; for example, pornography does appear to heighten both the desire and the courage for unconventional sexual experimentation..
