Purity in Print is the story of book censorship in America, especially as it was practiced by self-appointed groups calling themselves "Societies for the Suppression of Vice." Professor Boyer begins his study with the founding of the vice societies in fast growing American cities during the decades following the Civil War; his book ends with their decline in the 1930s, a decline symbolized by Judge John Woolsey's 1933 decision to allow Joyce's Ulysses through U.S. Customs. Book censorship still exists, of course -indeed, it is showing distinct signs of a resurgence at this moment -but Purity in Print concerns the heyday of the censors and those who fought them.

Purity in Print goes beyond the familiar "landmark" court decisions to examine the often complex social and intellectual circumstances which underlay those decisions. It is based not only on newspaper accounts, memoirs, and court records, but also on interviews with individuals who figured in the censorship battles of the 1920s and 1930s. The book is full of revealing anecdotes about the protagonists in censorship fights, with a number of surprises as to who stood where during the actual heat of controversy. H. L. Mencken, often considered the living antithesis of vice-society leaders like Anthony Comstock and John Sumner, in 1922 joined with Sumner to expurgate Dreiser's "The Genius", urging upon the author the wisdom of accepting some pruning in order to get the suppressed book re-issued. In sharp contrast were the noisy, direct confrontations with the censors undertaken by men like Donald Friede, publisher of The Well of Loneliness, and Horace Liveright, source of numerous challenged titles in the 1920s. It is interesting to note that in some instances the publishers who were more amenable to the censors' demands were those whose companies survived and flourished, while the flamboyant Friede, Liveright, and others failed in the aftermath of the 1929 crash.

The progression toward a more liberal literary climate was far from smooth, and frequently disgruntled older authors and conservative publishers covertly supported the censors. Frequently, too, it was ephemeral fluff that was saved from the censor's wrath, rather than a Stephen Crane, or Theodore Dreiser or James Joyce. But, in broad outline, the story of Purity in Print is a record of the decline of the vice-society mentality and of educating American society to an appreciation of the great works that illuminate the conditions of life in the twentieth century. The book is a fascinating chapter in the history of American taste and taboos, and of the growing awareness of and honesty toward a new and more complex world.

Private Life in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) is often seen as having been virtually non-existent, simply another East German commodity forever in short supply. In part this had to do with the common perception that private life and state socialism were at odds by definition, to the extent that the private person has no legal identity or political standing outside the socialist community. “There is no effective sexual calculus, no social science to measure sexual change,” Philip Nobile writes. “And the available evidence on the so-called sex revolution is purely circumstantial.” We are obviously in a period of experimentation in this area-some of it directed toward an attempt to redefine our habits and needs. Much of the writing in this volume describes various facets of the current scene, guesses at the future, and analyzes the implications of the new freedoms of choice. But implicit even there are the deeper questions that emerge out of the work of such men as Norman O. Brown and Herbert Marcuse that ponder not only our history of sexual mores but what it means to be a sexual human being.

Professors Brown and Marcuse are represented by excerpts from Life Against Death and Eros and Civilization; they resurrect the body and abolish repression in a reinterpretation of Freud. The essays that follow, with their descriptions of the new styles and new standards in sexual behavior, demonstrate the connection between changing consciousness and society’s views and the actng out (or stamping out) of certain sexual impulses. E.J. Hobsbawn discusses the connection between modern political and sexual revolutions.

The next group is led off by Ernest Becker’s “Everyman as Pervert” and Thomas Nigel’s “Sexual Pervesrion,” two philosophic articles that recount and criticize the clichés about what constitutes sexual perversion. This is followed by decriptions of some things that pass for perversion: voyeurism (by Dorothy Kalins); “The New Homosexuality,” by Tom Burke; “Naked Therapy,” by Paul Bindrim; body painting (by Joe Mancini).

Literature and pornography are treated by George Steiner and Kenneth Tynan. There are articles on the enormously successful Playboy and Screw, and Jeremy Bugler writes about sex in advertising in “The Sex Sell.”

The performing arts are victims of creeping sex. Robert Craft covers topless Hollywood girls and other phenomena, such as Oh!Calcutta!, and there are comments on Che, Sex Rock, and “Pop Sex” – the last, a sex mores fantasy by Craig Karpel.

Charles Winick takes a dismal view of the decline of libido in “The Desexualized Society,” and Dan Greenburg lampoons the sex-lab technique in “Was It Good for You, Too?,” a satire on the Johnson-Masters experiments.

Two interpretations clash on female orgasm: Susan Lydon’s “Liberating Woman’s Orgasm” and Leslie Farber’s “The Traditional O.”

Derek Wright in “Sex: Instinct or Appetite?” argues that there is a profound, necessary, and needed connection between sex and affection.

The New Eroticism is a serious and comic anthology of readings on the sex revolution –which asks the question whether our sexual government has been overthrown and a radical new consciousness achieved or whether we are merely writing new stage directions for the same old play.

Science in the Bedroom shows how, for most of its history and in whatever country it has been undertaken, sex research has been driven by forces outside itself. Among those forces have been groups marginalized as deviant, including homosexuals, free-love advocates, and feminists; courts and governments in search of independent data to support public morality standards; the desires of women for safe and effective contraceptive devices freely disseminated; the desire of doctors to medicalize all sex research and to view only the research that produces treatment therapies as valuable; and the fears of public funding institutes that their images will be sullied if they support independent sex research. The book traces how this moral overtone led the Rockefeller family to support sex research and how their money led to basic scientific breakthroughs in the 1920s and 1930s, culminating in the Kinsey studies. The backlash was so great, however, that the Rockefeller Foundation dropped its sex studies.

Based on archival sources and extensive personal interviews, Science in the Bedroom celebrates the lives and work of the major figures who risked their academic reputations to work ina stigmatized field. Prostitution, like the weather, has often been talked about, but very rarely has any scholar bothered to do any research on the topic. Few serious studies on prostitution have been undertaken by social scientists over the past fifty years. Although an occasional sociologist, psychiatrist, or anthropologist has concerned himself, the historian has totally neglected the subject. As a result this book is the first attempt at a serious history of prostitution in English in this century. Despite a lack of historical monographs, there is both a demand and a need for studies on the topic. This is evidenced by the fact that bookstores still sell and libraries still stock the work of the American, W.W. Sanger, who wrote before the Civil War. Despite its inadequacies the Sanger work has been almost continuously reprinted, without any revision, since it first appeared. Yet Sanger made no real effort to be objective but instead made a plea for the legalization of prostitution.

Dr. Bullough starts with an all-encompassing definition of prostitution, includes a short discussion on primate behavior, and then carries the story from primitive societies to contemporary times. In each chapter he examines the general attitude of the period toward women, the place of sex in society, and the extent and nature of prostitution. There is a long section on religion in which Jewish, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu, Confucian and Taoist ideas on sex and prostitution are examined. From such an examination it becomes apparent that while some religions have condemned prostitution and others have condoned it, the prostitute has continued to exist. Perhaps somewhat surprising is the large number of religious writers who in the past have encouraged prostitution. In the concluding section the author discusses the various psychological and sociological explanations of prostitution, summarizes the appearance of the prostitute and prostitution in today’s world. From the last chapters it appears that it is not only historians who have neglected the study of prostitution, but other students of social sciences as well. As a result the author argues that his study cannot be conceived of as a definitive monograph on prostitution, but rather as laying the foundation for future studies by other scholars. To assist such research the book is well footnoted and indexed, and includes two appendices, one a bibliographical guide to reference works in the field, and the second a list of euphemisms for prostitute and prostitution which the author encountered in his studies.

The author, Dr. Vern L. Bullough, is a historian who has specialized in the history of medicine and of science. He has published numerous articles primarily on medical history, in various learned journals. He was assisted in his researches by his wife, Bonnie L. Bullough.

Pornography in A Free Society addresses an issue about which citizens of Western nations are sharply divided, one regarded as sufficiently important to justify the establishment of four nationally chartered commissions within twenty years: in the United States in 1968, in Great Britain in 1977, in Canada in 1985, and in the United States again in 1985. The reports of the two American commissions were met with storms of protest and denunciation. That of the first, appointed by President Johnson, was denounced as legitimizing pornography and rejected as “morally bankrupt” by President Nixon when it appeared in 1970. That of the second, appointed by Attorney General William French Smith at the specific request of President Ronald Reagan, was criticized for its “glaring and persistent biases” and condemned as “the signal for a gigantic national crusade… against demon porn” when it appeared in 1986.

The immediate stimulus for this book was the publication of the 1986 report. Gordon Hawkins and Franklin Zimring attempt to look at the problem of pornography in a wider perspective than that of partisan political debate. To that end, they compare the two American reports with the report of the British Committee on Obscenity and Film Censorship, which appeared during the years between the American reports. Then they consider a number of particular problems that have become significant with the increased availability of sexually explicit material since the 1960s: pornography and the status of women; pornography and child protection; and the social control of pornography without censorship.

Pornography has been described as a problem “freighted with all the anxieties and hypocrisies of society’s attitude toward sex.” The authors argue that the furor over pornography and the commissions themselves are part of a “ceremony of adjustment” to widespread availability of sexually explicit material, and that we can expect less social concern about pornography as time passes.

Whatever their own views, readers will find the authors’ analysis of the conceptual basis of the controversy over pornography interesting and compelling.

This pioneer volume, the product of 11 years’ research into the anatomy and physiology of human sexual response, represents a major breakthrough in our knowledge of human sexuality. Venturing far beyond the efforts of Freud, Ellis, and Kinsey, Masters and Johnson have been able to record the physical reactions that occur when the human male and female respond to sexual stimulation. Their findings not only set forth some basic, long-needed physiologic and psychologic facts, but disprove many of the fantasies and fallacies about human sexuality that have been disseminated by ignorance, taboo, and pseudoscience throughout the ages. Most of all, however, their work now enables medical and behavioral personnel to cope with the widespread problem of sexual inadequacy. By providing sound scientific data upon which responsible professionals may base their clinical efforts, countless numbers of impotent and frigid mates can be counseled and helped to sexual adjustment.

Perhaps even more important, Masters and Johnson’s basic groundwork in sex physiology will now make it possible for medicine to assume a responsibility it has neglected far too long –that of educating its own. Through the authors’ efforts, those responsible for sex education finally have before them clinical facts about one of the most vital aspects of human existence.

HUMAN SEXUAL RESPONSE, the first published volume of the authors’ findings, is primarily concerned with the sexual response cycles of men and women between the ages of 21 and 50, with emphasis on similarities rather than differences in their sexual response patterns. 382 women and 312 men comprise the research population, whose sociologic background, physiologic capacity, and response to effective sexual stimulation are considered in detail. Most of the text is devoted to male and female orgasmic expression.

A portion deals with the response patterns and reactive potentials of the geriatric population. The authors’ study of sexual response patterns in patients up to the age of 89 provides conclusive evidence that an increase in years does not necessarily mean a decline in sexual adequacy. Their findings in this area, as well as their studies of the effect of pregnancy on male and female sexuality and the influence of sexual activity on the heart and blood pressure, are reported here for the first time.

Kinsey opened the doors of contemporary culture to the study of human sexual response, and his work is still a landmark in sociologic investigation. Masters and Johnson have taken medical sexology one step further by actually measuring the physiologic and psychologic responses of men and women to sexual stimulation. For their detailed study in an area in which little of physiologic fact has previously been known. Masters and Johnson have achieved a unique distinction with HUMAN SEXUAL RESPONSE. It is the first of two volumes for the professional audience proposed by the authors. Further clinical follow-up will be the subject of their next work, HUMAN SEXUAL INADEQUACY.

Although Dr Thomas Bowdler’s activities in this area gave rise to the familiar verb “to bowdlerize”. The science of castration of literature and language antedates the late Georgian and early Victorians days of the good doctor and has lived from his time until now. The somewhat amateurish efforts of his sister to make Shakespeare readable inspired Thomas Bowdler; but Miss Harriet Bowdler was not the first to mutilate him, nor was Thomas the last. From the days of Cromwell on, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Swift, Defoe, Dryden and Robert Burns –among others –were maimed by those who thought to purify. And the death of Queen Victoria did not mark the end: some of ur distinguished 20^th-century scholars have produced bowdlerized editions of works of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Mark Twain, which their authors (except for Mark Twain) would scarcely have recognized.

Mr Perrin has written a partial history of bowdlerism’ the complete story would take up many volumes. But what he writes here of the fate of the Bible, the classics, the Victorian poets, is both fascinating and horrible. The increasing severity of the bowdlerist at work tells us much about the mind of the Victorian and what he thought pure, what he was sure was obscene.

The New Female Sexuality is the first book to disclose detailed findings (inclusive extensive verbatim responses) based on objective, scientific research relating to the sexual attitudes, practices, experiences, desires, etc., of the female social nudists and “potential” nudists (including a number of lesbians). Moreover, this volume is the first to emphasize and highlight the relationships between various sexual activities (such as masturbation, non-virginity, oral-genital contacts, group sexual behavior, wife-swapping, the experiencing of sexual fantasies, “special” sexual techniques, preferred positions during sexual intercourse, homosexual contacts, extramarital relations, sexual contacts with animals) and feelings of self-esteem and security.

Today’s social scene reflects a marked tendency toward exposure of the human body. This is to exemplified by the widespread employment of topless waitresses in restaurants and night clubs; the clothing fashions of females featuring see-through blouses and dresses; the nonwearing of brassieres; appearances of Hollywood stars in nude movie scenes; displays of nudity in numerous advertisements; and the recent rash of Broadway and 0ff-Broadway plays in which not only the actors appear totally nude, but the members of the audience also join in and disrobe completely. On the psychological scene there has been a new emphasis on nudity, particularly in regard to psychotherapy in which it has been used effectively, especially in California.

This book is part of a series dealing with the relationships between the sexual behavior patterns of different types of females and certain personality characteristics. Female social nudists and “potential” nudists with whom this book is mainly concerned comprise one segment of the author’s large sample of females on which data relating to sexuality have been gathered. The total group of subjects consists of females from various walks of life.

In addition to revealing many important and fascinating points of information concerning the sexual experiences and needs of female social nudists, et al, the findings presented in this book indicate that during the past decade or so the attitudes of women toward sex have changed considerably. Females now feel much freer in discussing and disclosing their sexual desires, practices and experiences. This change has necessitated and updating of the presently available statistics on female sexual behavior. Because of this, the monumental study by A. C. Kinsey, W. B. Pomeroy, C. E. Martin and P. H. Gebhard published in 1953, can no longer be viewed as statistically representative of present-day sexual for the female.

At present there are no established statistical norms for female sexual behavior in our American society. When the data in this volume are properly evaluated, it will be seen that the percentage figures with respect to sexual activities will be appreciably different than those reported by Kinsey et al. In terms of what is apparent (especially in view of the relationships between different sexual practices and levels of self-esteem and security), many of the sexual acts, etc., which formerly were considered to be “abnormal” or perverted may no longer be perceived in such a manner. There are many important implications herein which psychotherapists, clinicians, marriage counselors, medical practitioners and persons interested in sex education should find particularly valuable.
